Beyond the Label

Beyond the Label (BTL) is an awareness campaign that focuses on building a more inclusive community by redefining and replacing labels that are given to us. Labels are disabling and being disabled is not defined by physical or cognitive limits, but social limits. Despite the social labels we have been given, whether by our race, ethnicity, gender, age, sexual orientation, disability or religion, we have all been affected by the disabling effect of them in our society. For our members and individuals alike, the stigma of, “they can’t do that,” has not only segregated them, but also limited their opportunities to become contributing individuals in their communities. Beyond the Label is inspired by our members who choose to live beyond their label because it isn’t what defines them, rather it’s their abilities and perseverance.

Join us in looking Beyond the Label and help us build a society where everyone can thrive with dignity and respect.

SCHOOL
PRESENTATIONS

Since 2013, The Centre for Dreams has shared our presentation with elementary schools, high schools, post-secondary institutions, and churches in York Region, presenting to more than 5,000 individuals. Our mission is to advocate for the abilities of those living with disabilities and promote inclusivity.

We are excited to visit your elementary school to discuss the Beyond the Label Campaign in the context of anti-bullying initiatives for students with disabilities. Additionally, we offer presentations for high school students in various departments, including Social Science, Religion, Civics and Careers, and more. Our program can be tailored to align with the current curriculum at both secondary and post-secondary levels, ensuring a seamless integration into your educational framework.

Invite us to your institution and join us in fostering a more inclusive and understanding community.

CORPORATE EDI TRAINING

Our workshop begins with an overview of the historical context of developmental disabilities and the origins of The Centre for Dreams organization. Participants will learn about appropriate terminology and gain a brief understanding of various intellectual and developmental disabilities.

The training will cover intervention techniques and communication strategies grounded in theoretical perspectives of developmental programming. The session will conclude with a practical component, allowing participants to apply their newly acquired skills by interacting with adults living with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Join us for an informative and hands-on experience designed to enhance understanding and foster inclusivity in the workplace.
